Tree works at Old Town Hall Gardens, Whitefield

Essential tree works are taking place at Old Town Hall Gardens, Whitefield and will last until Friday (8 May).

The works will involve the removal of trees that are dead, diseased, dying, or pose a safety risk to people or buildings. No healthy trees will be felled as part of the programme.

To support the long-term sustainability of the park, 10 new fruit trees will be planted, alongside a wider planting scheme involving bulbs, woodland shrubs and wildflowers

The imminent tree works form part of the wider improvement proposals for this site included within the adopted Whitefield Town Centre Plan. The plan, funded through the Local Growth and Place Flexible Grant, is helping to guide investment and enhancements across key sites in the town centre.

During the works, areas around the trees being worked on may, including paths, be closed at short notice to allow the contractors to operate safely.

Jack Livingstone, economic development and projects officer at Bury Council, said: “These works are necessary to remove trees that are no longer safe and to help users of the Old Town Hall Gardens. I’d like to reassure residents that only dead, diseased or dangerous trees are being removed, and no healthy trees will be affected.

“Following council-run events in 2025 and 2026, a community group has formed to help take care of the Old Town Hall Gardens. Due to their great efforts and enthusiasm, the space is already much improved. The group meet every second Friday of the month from 10am to 12.30pm, and all are welcome to join in.”

Works are expected to be completed by Friday 8 May, subject to the weather.
