Tree works at Victoria Park, Whitefield

Bury Council has announced that essential tree works will take place at Victoria Park, Whitefield from Wednesday (22 April) and are expected to last approximately three days.

The works will involve the removal of trees that are dead, diseased, dying, or pose a safety risk. No healthy trees will be felled as part of the programme.

To support the long-term sustainability of the park, 16 new trees will be planted, alongside a wider planting scheme involving bulbs, woodland shrubs and wildflowers

Another five new trees were also introduced to the park last year, in partnership with City of Trees.

The imminent tree works form part of the wider improvement proposals for Victoria Park included within the adopted Whitefield Town Centre Plan. The plan, funded through the Local Growth and Place Flexible Grant, is helping to guide investment and enhancements across key sites in the town centre.

During the works, construction vehicles will be accessing the site and some areas of the park will be temporarily closed to allow contractors to operate safely.

Also for safety, temporary traffic controls will be in place on Bury New Road between 9.30am and 3.30pm each day. During these times, traffic will operate in single file in both directions, with short stop‑go periods while sections of the trees are carefully lowered and cleared. Any debris will be moved safely out of the roadway before traffic is allowed to continue. While some brief delays are expected, this approach will help keep traffic moving where possible. Road users are advised to plan ahead, allow extra time for journeys, and follow all on‑site signage and instructions.

Jack Livingstone, economic development and projects officer at Bury Council, said: “These works are necessary to remove trees that are no longer safe and to help protect park users and the surrounding area. I’d like to reassure residents that only dead, diseased or dangerous trees are being removed, and no healthy trees will be affected.

“Victoria Park is a valued green space in Whitefield, and these works are an important step in supporting the park as part of the wider town centre improvement plans. We thank residents and visitors for their patience and understanding while this work is carried out.”

Works are expected to be completed by Friday (24 April) subject to weather conditions.
