Watch the annual Holocaust Memorial commemoration

On the 27 January each year the world comes together to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, to remember the six million Jewish people killed and persecuted in the Holocaust and the subsequent genocides of Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Darfur and Myanmar. Friday 27 January 2023 will mark the seventy-eighth anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

Residents are invited to view the annual Holocaust Memorial commemoration, which is being streamed live on Thursday 26 January at 7pm, with the recording available after the event. You can view this at: https://buryholocaustmemorialevent.vidius.co.uk

The event is taking place on the Thursday evening being mindful that Holocaust Memorial Day itself falls on the Sabbath this year.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2023 is Ordinary People. Ordinary people were involved in all aspects of the Holocaust. Ordinary people were perpetrators, bystanders, rescuers, witnesses – and ordinary people were victims. On Thursday we will reflect on this, including through stories of such ordinary people and their extraordinary experiences. A series of memorial candles will be lit by people of different ages and faiths, a survivor of the Holocaust will tell their story, and a poem will be recited that has been produced especially for the event by young people in the Council’s care.
