Whitefield councillor to become deputy mayor

Whitefield councillor Noel Bayley is to become the next deputy mayor of Bury, and then mayor the following year in line with protocol.

His nomination was approved by members of the council at their meeting last night.

Cllr Bayley has served the borough as a councillor for ten years, initially in St Mary’s ward in Prestwich and now in Besses ward.

He is the council’s deputy cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, and chairs the walking and cycling forum, soon to become the Local Bee Network Committee.

Cllr Bayley was born in June 1966 in Withington, Manchester and went to school in Wythenshawe where he was brought up, and then attended Xaverian College for three years.

He has spent most of his working life in the Civil Service (including the MoD, Customs & Excise and the Benefits Agency) and in local government (Manchester City Council) and is a trade unionist.

Cllr Bayley moved to the borough of Bury in 1991 and has lived in Bury and Radcliffe before now residing in Whitefield.

He has been a season ticket holder at Manchester City since 1980 and enjoys travelling and writing, having penned a column in The Big Issue covering art and music.

Cllr Bayley said: “It’s a great honour to be nominated as deputy mayor for the borough I have lived in for more than 30 years. I’m very much looking forward to it and will do my best to serve residents across the community.”

The current mayor of Bury is Moorside councillor Sandra Walmsley, who will be succeeded in May by the deputy mayor, North Manor councillor Khalid Hussain.
