Your chance to see historic Radcliffe Manor revealed

Special guided tours of Radcliffe Manor and a glimpse into the town’s early history will take place next Saturday (12 Sep).

The event is part of the National Heritage Open Days weekend, when historic properties around the country are opened up for viewing.

The volunteer-led tours will start at the entrance to Close Park at 11am, noon, 1pm and 2pm and will preview a heritage trail to be launched later in the year. The trail will soon be described in a booklet, on information panels and through a website. It will cover the history of the tower and the house and hall that once stood alongside, as well as St Mary’s Church, the tithebarn and the Bealey family.

People on the tour will also see progress on the Tower site – the recent repair work on the tower itself as well as work that has begun to link the site to Close Park and show the location of buildings that used to stand around the Tower.

St Mary’s Church, where teas and cake will be available, will also be open to visitors on the Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

The Radcliffe Heritage Project has been made possible by grants of £266,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £54,408 from WREN. Although co-ordinated by Bury Council, and partnered by Salford University and Bury College, much of the research and site investigation has been carried out by volunteers.
