ESVAGT popular among young sailors
70 percent of one class from Svendborg Maritime School applied to join ESVAGT.
ESVAGT is a regular participant at the annual career day, Martec, at Frederikshavn, where the shipping company’s stand has plenty of visitors.
Martec offers a large number of training courses within the maritime sector, including the professional bachelor degree in marine and mechanical engineering management (engineer), ordinary ship assistant, sailor and marine engineer – and ESVAGT offers a career at the end of the course. That makes college and the shipping company a good match and keeps Tina Halkjær Nielsen, Recruitment Officer at ESVAGT, very busy.
Positions as trainee at ESVAGT are very attractive:
”Our advert for trainees at the www.esvagt.com webpage had 253 visits ahead of the annual career day and the applicants were really good,” says Tina Halkjær Nielsen, who signed contracts with ten trainees at Martec in 2014:
”We take them on as junior masters if they do well and later on they can train on to become engineers or machinists,” says Tina Halkjær Nielsen.
Job and career
There are also plenty of applications to the shipping company from the maritime school in Svendborg. The school has three classes with a total of 42 students – and 70 percent of them applied to ESVAGT.
“Some of our marine staff have visited the school to tell the students about ESVAGT and that has clearly had a positive effect. We interviewed 18 students and employed 13. The other applicants have been kept on our records as still of interest because they were certainly also well-qualified,” says Tina Halkjær Nielsen.
She believes that the versatility inherent in working for a shipping company makes it attractive to so many young people.
”They know that working for us will be interesting and varied. They also know that they can gain both an education and a career with us. That helps to make us attractive both as a trainee place and as a workplace,” says Tina Halkjær Nielsen.
