Press release -
Accessibility upgrades to restart at Biggleswade station this January
Network Rail has issued the following press release:
Work is set to restart at Biggleswade station, managed by Great Northern, this month to make it more accessible, with the construction of a new footbridge and lifts.
This will provide all passengers – particularly those with limited mobility, heavy luggage, or pushchairs – with a step-free, accessible route to and between platforms.
The project, which is funded by the Government’s Access for All Programme, is due to begin this month and is expected to be completed by December 2025.
Biggleswade station will remain open to passengers during the construction.
Stuart Calvert, Capital Delivery Director for Network Rail’s Eastern region, said: “Improving accessibility at stations is crucial and benefits everyone – whether it's people with mobility challenges, parents or carers with pushchairs, or passengers carrying heavy luggage. It also encourages greater use of public transport, reducing car journeys, easing congestion, and helping to lower carbon emissions."
“We sincerely apologise for the delays in delivering the accessibility upgrades at Biggleswade station and fully understand the frustration this has caused for passengers and the local community.
“After several setbacks, we are pleased to be re-commencing work and are committed to delivering these much-needed improvements.”
Carl Martin, Accessibility Lead at Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) which operates Biggleswade station and Thameslink and Great Northern trains, said: “Everyone at GTR is committed to building a more accessible and inclusive railway, and we’re extremely pleased that work on this essential project is set to resume.
“Lifts to platforms will benefit everyone who finds stairs a barrier, and for some disabled passengers this project has the potential to be life-changing.”
