East Grinstead commuter scoops value of season ticket in competition win

An East Grinstead commuter is celebrating after winning £3,696 with Govia Thameslink Railway’s competition for Key Smartcard season ticket holders.

John Peck moved from Crystal Palace to East Grinstead in October and signed up for a Key Smartcard annual season ticket in November. In December, he became GTR’s third competition winner and was presented with a cheque last week for the value of his season ticket.

The 50-year-old, who is a deputy registrar at the University of Westminster, said: “It was a complete shock to win. I had to read the email three times! I have never won anything in my life.”

John added: “I have been used to travelling with an Oyster card and it was a bit strange to go back to a paper ticket. The Key Smartcard is more durable than a paper ticket and you’re less likely to lose it.”

John, who travels on Southern rail, is now looking forward to spending the cash on a bathroom refurbishment at the 1930s home he has moved into with his partner.

GTR’s Smart Ticketing Manager Sherisse Shelton-Smith said: “Congratulations to John and we hope his bathroom refurbishment goes well. There are many benefits to switching from paper tickets to a Key Smartcard, for example they are more secure, quicker and easier to use and Delay Repay claims are generated with just a click of a button.”

GTR’s monthly competition is open to Key Smartcard season ticket holders across GTR’s Thameslink, Great Northern and Southern brands.

Passengers can register for a Key Smartcard online at Thameslink, Great Northern or Southern websites - greatnorthernrail.com, thameslinkrailway.com or southernrailway.com – through the section on tickets. The Key Smartcard is sent to the customer’s address. Key Smartcard users can then buy tickets online and tap on a ticket gate or station validator to pick up the electronic ticket.

Key Smartcard benefits for passengers, compared to travelling with a paper ticket, include:

  • more durable
  • time-saving - no queues at the ticket office and a simple tap in, tap out
  • more secure - lost Key Smartcards can be instantly cancelled and replaced
  • automatically-generated Delay Repay claims submitted with just a click of a button
