Great Northern highly commended at rail industry’s Oscars
Great Northern was last night (Thursday 16 September) highly commended in the industry’s answer to the Oscars, the National Rail Awards.
Judges heard that a new leadership team had improved punctuality for the period being assessed, with new trains and best-ever passenger satisfaction (spring 2020).
The response to the pandemic had been first class, delivering a safe and reliable service that responded to the needs of passengers, keeping key workers on the move throughout.
Great Northern Managing Director Tom Moran said: “I’m delighted for the team around me that has transformed Great Northern for our passengers. We know we have much still to do and, as we begin to emerge from the pandemic, we’re determined to build on this success for our customers.”

Govia Thameslink Railway
Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) operates Thameslink, Great Northern, Southern and Gatwick Express services as follows:
- Thameslink – cross-London services between Bedford/Peterborough/Cambridge and Brighton/Horsham/Littlehampton/East Grinstead, and between Luton/St Albans and Sutton/Wimbledon/Rainham; plus services between London and Sevenoaks
- Great Northern – services between London and Welwyn, Hertford, Peterborough, Cambridge and King’s Lynn
- Southern – services between London and the Sussex coast (Brighton, Worthing, Eastbourne, Bognor Regis, Hastings) and parts of Surrey, Kent and Hampshire (Ashford International, Southampton, Portsmouth)
- Gatwick Express – fast, non-stop direct services between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria (currently suspended during the pandemic)
