Press release -
Hampden Park station footbridge removed for refurbishment
Passengers at Hampden Park railway station in East Sussex are being warned to allow extra time to switch between platforms because Network Rail is removing the footbridge this weekend for specialist refurbishment.
From Saturday 7 February until mid-April, the only recommended route from one side of the station to the other will be by a level crossing at the far end of the station.
Some passengers use Hampden Park to change trains. Southern Rail say they should use nearby Eastbourne station instead.
Furthermore, Hampden Park station will be closed entirely on Sunday 8 February for a crane to remove the footbridge (see notes to editors).
Southern Rail Head of Stations Tom Easdown said: “The footbridge at Hampden Park is a vital part of our operation, so it’s good news for the community that Network Rail is investing in its refurbishment.
“But our passengers will need to allow plenty of extra time to cross from one side of the station to the other, bearing in mind that if there are trains in the vicinity, the level crossing barriers will be down. And if you’re changing trains then I’d advise against it – travel into Eastbourne instead as you may struggle to make the connection.”
The existing paint system has reached the end of its working life, so it’s being fully renewed with a modern protective coating designed to last at least 15 years. This helps protect the steel structure from weather damage and reduces the need for future repairs.
Network Rail contractors are also replacing the stairs and decking with new, more durable materials that offer better slip resistance and are designed to last up to 25 years. At the same time, strengthening work is being carried out to ensure the bridge can safely handle expected passenger use. New handrails and safety mesh will be installed to improve protection and prevent objects from falling onto the tracks below.
Finally, there will be improvements in accessibility through new tactile paving at the top of the footbridge and on the platforms, helping customers with visual impairments navigate the station more confidently.
Tim Leighton, Sussex Route Infrastructure Director for Network Rail said: “The bridge at Hampden Park needs some TLC to strengthen and refurbish it, keeping it safe for years to come. In a complex operation, we will be lifting it out by crane to transport it by road for specialist refurbishment. I’d like to thank passengers for their patience while we complete this vital work.”

Notes to editors
The station footbridge will close on Saturday, 7 February. On Sunday, 8 February, Hampden Park station will be closed entirely for a crane to remove the footbridge and on this day replacement buses will run between Polegate, Eastbourne and Hastings. More information can be found on Southern’s planned works calendar.
There is another footbridge outside the station, next to the level crossing, however it involves crossing a busy road with no formal pedestrian crossing. Therefore, for safety’s sake, passengers are advised to use the level crossing.
Information is being shared at the station, in the community and also online on Southern’s website www.southernrailway.com/hampdenpark.
