Press release -

Lift Off - major revamp of lifts completed at Luton Airport Parkway station

Network Rail and Govia Thameslink Railway have reopened the lifts for passengers at Luton Airport Parkway station after a major three-month project to upgrade them.

The £900,000 investment has seen the old lifts on platforms 1, 2/3 and 4 removed and new ones installed. The new lifts are more modern and reliable, making them nicer for passengers to use.

The work began in July and saw all three lifts closed at the same time. This sped up the completion of the project and meant that station users could reap the benefits of the project more quickly. During the upgrade, Thameslink’s dedicated assisted travel team supported passengers who required step-free access.

Gary Walsh, Route Director for Network Rail’s East Midlands route, said: “We’re really happy that this upgrade is now complete. We know the old lifts were a big frustration to regular users, and the new ones on platforms 1, 2/3 and 4 are now more reliable.

“We worked hard to keep any impact on passengers to a minimum and we’re really grateful for everybody’s patience whilst this work took place.”

Tom Moran, Managing Director for Thameslink and Great Northern, said: “I’m delighted that our passengers at Luton Airport Parkway now have new, reliable lifts. This significant investment is a great step forward for the station and makes it even easier to take the train to or from Luton Airport. I’m very grateful to Network Rail for completing the work so efficiently, and to our passengers for their patience over the last few months.

“We’re also giving Luton Airport Parkway better information screens and refurbished toilets as part of our network-wide, multimillion-pound station improvement programme.”

Passengers are reminded that they should follow Government guidance and only travel if they need to. People must wear a face covering on public transport, unless they are exempt. Passengers can travel with confidence by washing or sanitising their hands before and after their journey and maintaining their social distance.
