Press release -

New art arrives at Peckham Rye

Passengers using the waiting room at Peckham Rye station are being treated to wonderful new art, as a result of a collaboration between Southern and a local children's academy. Mayor of Southwark Coucillor Kath Whittam welcomed passengers to come and see the art at an opening ceremony Friday evening.

A new art exhibit created by pupils, aged between five and 10, at Peckham Palm Tree Academy is being displayed on Platform 3 of the station. The theme of the work is "Inventions", with the aim of being both visually interesting for passengers and inspiring the children to think about their environment and how they would improve it.

Dominique Asamoah, Station Manager, said: "When the group contacted me to see if we would provide the space for free, I was more than happy to agree. We are focused on supporting local groups around our network and this is another great example of how working with the community we can help to improve the travelling experience for our passengers. I thank the youngsters for all their hard work and think everyone will agree the art is extremely striking."

Phil Hankinson, volunteer at Palm Tree Academy, who led the work, added: "It has been a privilege for me to work with the children and staff at Palm Tree Academy on this project. The work came out of several afternoons of discussion and drawing and I think the results are fantastic. Palm Tree is like a big extended family and there's always a lot of fun. I hope that the artwork reflects some of that energy and will bring some vibrancy to the waiting room at Peckham Rye."

Alishea Marsh who runs Palm Tree Academy, said: "Palm Tree children are really blessed to showcase their amazing talent at Peckham Rye station. They have worked very hard and thoroughly enjoyed the project. I hope their work will inspire and motivate many for years to come. Thanks to Phil, Southern Rail staff, all parents and staff at Palm Tree as well as everyone who donated and made this opportunity possible. Last but not least, Palm Tree Children. You rock!"
