New Hertfordshire train station manager hopes to inspire others into rail careers

A new train station manager is hoping to inspire others to pursue railway careers following his own progression through the ranks.

James Miller joined the railway 11 years ago, and after mastering a career as a passenger host he has now taken on his first management position, managing stations at Knebworth, Welwyn North, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield and Welham Green.

Before joining the railway, James, 32, had studied catering at college and had worked in the food industry for two years. But by the age of 21, he switched careers and began working on the ticket gate at Finsbury Park. He aspired to become a train driver and went on to pass all the assessments before finding an eyesight issue prevented him from being accepted on medical grounds.

Although disappointed, James was undeterred by this set back and found other opportunities for progression in rail – an industry his father also worked in.

Married father-of-two James, who lives in the Deepings, Peterborough, said: “I wanted career progression and I've taken every opportunity to complete NVQs in customer services, leadership and management and recently team leadership.

"And when I saw this job come up [station manager role], I jumped at the chance. I'm a strong believer in starting at the bottom and working your way up. Rising to station manager was an ambitious move, and I hope I can be an inspiration to others. Great Northern offers many learning opportunities and real progression for those willing to put in the hard work.”

Customer Service Route Manager for Great Northern, Angela Palmer, said: "I am extremely proud of James and all that he has achieved in his personal development. He has worked extremely hard to complete his Level 3 Team Leader NVQ and demonstrated to me that he was a star in the making. I am sure that he will be a very welcome addition to the station management team and I wish him every success in his new role."

And when he’s not working, James enjoys cooking with his wife (also a trained chef) and hosting a Monday evening show on Peterborough Community Radio which helps to showcase local music talent.
