Potters Bar rail user wins value of season ticket

A Potters Bar commuter “had to pinch” himself after winning the value of his Great Northern season ticket.

Steve Navesey entered Govia Thameslink Railway’s monthly competition giving Key Smartcard season ticket holders the chance to win back the value of their ticket. The competition is open to Key Smartcard season ticket holders across GTR’s Thameslink, Great Northern and Southern brands.

Steve, 57, who has commuted to London for about 25 years, was shocked to win £2,220 and says he’ll most likely put the money towards a cruise for himself and wife, Debbie.

The father-of-one, who works as a civil servant, said: “I entered the competition never thinking I’d win. I’ve had to pinch myself. The Key Smartcard is easier to use than a paper ticket because paper tickets can get worn out. The Key Smartcard is a brilliant idea.”

GTR’s Smart Ticketing Manager Sherisse Shelton-Smith said: “We were delighted to congratulate Steve on his win. Key Smartcards are more durable than paper tickets, as well as being quicker and easier to use at ticket gates.”

Passengers can register for a Key Smartcard online at Thameslink, Great Northern or Southern websites - greatnorthernrail.com, thameslinkrailway.com or southernrailway.com – through the section on tickets. The Key Smartcard is sent to the customer’s address. Key Smartcard users can then buy tickets online and tap on a ticket gate or station validator to pick up the electronic ticket.

Key Smartcard benefits for passengers, compared to travelling with a paper ticket, include:

  •  time-saving; no queues at the ticket office and a simple tap in, tap out to speed up journeys
  • more secure: lost smartcards can be instantly cancelled and replaced
  • automatically-generated Delay Repay claims submitted with just a click of a button
