Young adults with disabilities enjoy a great day out

Boathouse Theatre Arts is a performing arts company for young adults and children with disabilities in East Sussex, stretching an area from Rye to Eastbourne, and Southern recently made a donation for the group to go to Eastbourne and enjoy a performance at the Devonshire Theatre.

Kevin Barry, Chairman of Boathouse said: “ The group were extremely grateful to Southern, the money that was donated paid for the, tickets , bus and ice creams in the interval. We saw Jungle Book the Urban Story. We try once a year to take them to see shows to help with their performances. They all want me to let everyone know at Southern how much they enjoyed themselves and appreciate what Southern have done for them. We are constantly looking for funds to keep the groups going and this donation was a real help.”

Southern's Community Investment and CSR Manager, Andy Harrowell, said "At Southern, we are keen to put our stations and services at the heart of the communities they serve. When Kevin contacted us about help for the group we were very happy to look at what support we could offer. We are delighted that they enjoyed the trip and appreciate them taking the time to get in contact to pass on their thanks"

Kevin added “Boathouse Theatre Arts has been going for 6 years and have done 13 performances, the inspiration for setting up this group was my daughter Olivia , who is the founder member, Olivia has Down Syndrome and wanted to meet up with like minded people socially to share her passion for singing, dancing , drama and prop making."

About Boathouse

Boathouse has three groups, The young Adults aged from 16 plus, they meet every Sunday in Bexhill, the Childrens group aged 5-13 which meet on a Saturday morning in Bexhill and finally the Profound Multiple Learning Disabilities, life limiting, which also meet in Bexhill on a Monday morning. Boathouse is looking to launch a dance workshop in February in the half terms. When Boathouse first started it had 10 members it now has 70.
