As the RMT Union continues its highly disruptive and unnecessary strike action today on Southern routes, the reduced Southern service is currently operating well with around two thirds of services running.

Great Northern is warning passengers that its rail services will be significantly reduced and, in some places, suspended altogether this spring bank holiday weekend as a result of essential rail upgrade work by Network Rail.

In response to the RMT's announcement that it has moved the date of the conductors' strike from Friday 20 May to Wednesday 18 May, a spokesperson for Southern said:

Passengers travelling with Southern are being urged to check before they travel from today because of a significant number of cancellations due to a lack of available conductors.
New information screens with ‘at-a-glance’ journey details are being fitted to Thameslink stations in central London in preparation for a new generation of train and a future high intensity service.
In response to news that the RMT has postponed next week’s strike by its conductor members on Southern rail services, a spokesperson for Southern said:
Passengers travelling with Southern between Brighton and Southampton are being urged to check before they travel from 4 May and for what is likely to be the rest of the week because of a significant number of cancellations due to a lack of available conductors.
We expected to have serious constructive talks but sadly the RMT was not prepared to discuss details of the new role.
