We have cycled to the moon and back!

Cyclists wearing Hövding have together cycled the impressive distance of 1 million kilometres since September. This revelation comes from the data collected through the app that cyclists using Hövding 3 can upload.

The cyclists who have uploaded the Hövding 3 app have taken 308,308 bike trips, corresponding to 25 laps around the world and a CO2 saving of 254 tons compared to driving a car the same distance. This distance equals 1 million kilometres, or more than a return trip to the moon.

- It’s exhilarating to study the data collected on how Hövding wearers together can cover this distance in only a few months. This is just the beginning, and we’re looking forward to seeing more people uploading our app and contributing data for a safer cycling infrastructure in the future, says Hövding CEO Fredrik Carling.

Hövding’s third generation airbag for city cyclists was released September last year. It was the most significant launch in the history of the innovative company. Via Bluetooth, Hövding 3 can be connected to an app which reveals how far you have cycled and how much battery power is left. The app can contribute to a safer cycling experience in the future, as collated data gives an overview of where accidents are common and which roads are frequently used by cyclists. This offers insights into future cycling infrastructure development. The smart connection also features an ICE function (In Case of Emergency), which sends an SMS message to next of kin when an accident has prompted the airbag to inflate, with an option to reveal the coordinates of the accident site.

Hövding - Airbag for cyclists

Hövding started out in 2005 as a master’s thesis by the two founders Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, who, at the time, were studying Industrial Design at the University of Lund.

The project resulted in the concept of an airbag helmet, which won Innovationsbron’s Ideas Grant. This kick-started the process of developing Hövding into a real product. In 2006 Hövding won the Venture Cup, after which Hövding Sweden AB was founded.

Over the years Hövding has grown from just two people with a great idea, to a NASDAQ-listed company that handle everything from development and production to marketing and sales. Today Hövding consists of a team of around 30 people, all triggered by the word impossible, and Hövding’s airbag for cyclists is available in 16 markets across Europe.

The headquarters are located in an old chocolate factory in Malmö – the sixth greatest cycling city in the world. Final assembly of Hövding is carried out in association with the Japanese Company Nihon Plast.
