London Sport Awards marks fifth anniversary by announcing City of London partnership

The City of London Corporation, the governing body of London’s Square Mile, has today been announced as title partner to the capital’s biggest celebration of grassroots physical activity and sport, the London Sport Awards.

Celebrating their fifth anniversary in 2020, the London Sport Awards were established by London Sport to shine a light on the often-unrecognised work of volunteers, community groups and sporting initiatives to enhance Londoners’ lives through physical activity and sport. Celebrating the ways grassroots sport has made a real difference to life in the capital, the London Sport Awards are now widely-recognised as a highlight of London’s annual sporting calendar.

As part of the partnership between the London Sport Awards and the City of London Corporation, the 2020 ceremony will take place at the Guildhall on 6 March 2020, bringing the best and brightest of community sport right to the heart of the Square Mile.

The partnership also sees the launch of a brand-new Award category, co-designed by the City of London Corporation and London Sport, which celebrates the business world’s contribution to grassroots physical activity and sport.

William Russell, Lord Mayor of the City of London, said:

“It is great to see that the positive impact business is having on grassroots sport will be recognised for the first time at these awards.

"Grassroots sport helps make London the world-leading city it is today.

“And we are proud to help showcase the people making a difference to our capital.

“Together we will celebrate London’s businesses, sporting volunteers and community groups and help shine a light on their outstanding work.”

Tove Okunniwa, London Sport Chief Executive, said:

We are thrilled to welcome the City of London Corporation as our lead partner for the fifth anniversary of the London Sport Awards. The opportunity to bring the Awards to the iconic Guildhall and to celebrate the role of physical activity and sport right in the heart of the capital is something we’re delighted to be able to do.

“Each year, the London Sport Awards helps to show the amazing impact that grassroots sport has on our city every single day. By joining forces with the City of London Corporation, I am sure that this year’s Awards will be the biggest yet, and provide a fitting tribute to the amazing people, projects and initiatives that are changing Londoners’ lives right across the capital.”
