​Residents’ parking scheme for Radcliffe moves forward

A consultation for a proposed residents’ parking scheme on the Radcliffe streets worst affected by ‘park and leave’ Metrolink users has been launched.

Earlier this year 74% of households in the Bridgefield Street, Glebe Street and East Street areas of Radcliffe said they supported restrictions on the roads nearby.

Now more detailed proposals on how a scheme might work have been tabled. Added double yellow lines, 8am-6pm resident-only parking bays and ‘limited waiting’ areas could be introduced.

A formal consultation will now take place with people affected invited to have their say.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Residents in Radcliffe who live closest to the Metrolink are sick and tired of people using the area as an overspill car park, particularly as some of the parking is terrible. Prams, wheelchairs and residents’ own cars have been blocked in.

“While it’s great that we have a Metrolink right here in Radcliffe to boost our town’s connectivity with other places, the effect on nearby roads is a real pain.

“We are working with Metrolink and there are plans in the longer term to increase the existing car park’s capacity, possibly by adding a second storey. We are also encouraging more people to walk or cycle to the stop.

“However, these things won’t provide the immediate fixes people living in the Bridgefield Street area need. This proposed residents’ parking scheme should help alleviate some of the issues faced.”

Each household in the proposed area has been written to, lamp-post notices will be put up and formal notices put in the press.

Cllr Quinn added: “Our previous informal consultation with people living nearest to the Metrolink stop in Radcliffe indicated that they were largely in favour of a residents’ scheme, subject to details.

“The scheme being considered has a primary aim of providing residents in the area a reasonable chance of parking as close to their own homes as possible.

“We will be carefully considering how placing these types of restrictions will effect parking in Radcliffe town centre as a whole. What we don’t want to do is simply push the issue onto other streets.

“We would encourage people to have a close look at what’s proposed and then tell us what they think. All replies will be taken into account as we consider the next steps.”
