Umicore honors the best chemistry students of the year

Last Tuesday, Umicore Galvanotechnik GmbH honored the best ninth-grade chemistry students from the Schwaebisch Gmuend region for their outstanding achievements. The young people were invited to the company's headquarters in the heart of Gmünd's southern district and received a silver bar, among other things, in recognition of their achievements.

Later in the morning, Steffen Barth welcomed the visitors and gave a brief overview of the company. The students then took a tour of the plant, gaining exciting insights into the electroplating, production, and laboratory divisions. The participants were particularly impressed by the wide range of applications for electroplating processes—from computer chips and electric cars to wearables, jewelry, and medical technology. This gave the young people a first-hand experience of how their theoretical knowledge from chemistry lessons is applied in practice.

The tour was followed by an award ceremony, during which the silver bars were presented. The awards were presented in person by Karl Hieber, site manager at Umicore Galvanotechnik GmbH, and Steffen Barth, head of human resources. Both were impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm of the young talents.

The winners were:

  • Chris Landwehr, Adelbert-Stifter-Realschule
  • Marvin Reißmüller, Realschule Heubach
  • Luca Grünberger, Parler Gymnasium
  • Leni Schneider, Gymnasium Friedrich II.
  • Leonie Satler, Leinzell Secondary School

In addition to the awards ceremony, Umicore took the opportunity to provide information about the wide range of apprenticeships and dual study programs available at the company. Particular emphasis was placed on the opportunity to work on real projects right from the start—an aspect that was very well received by the students. The introductory internship presented was also seen as a valuable orientation aid, especially for those who are still looking for the right training company.

At the end of the event, the company invited everyone to lunch in its in-house canteen. In addition to training topics, personal topics were also discussed.

Human Resources Manager Steffen Barth was very satisfied with how the event went: “It is important to us to encourage young talent at an early stage and show them where their interests might lead them in their careers. I am delighted when we can open up perspectives that some of them had not yet considered.”

With this initiative, Umicore Galvanotechnik GmbH is underlining its commitment to education, promoting young talent, and the future of the chemical industry in the region.
