Webb Wins Supercross Title in Close Contest
May 21, 2025—At Round 17 of the AMA Supercross Championship held in Salt Lake City on Saturday, May 11, Cooper Webb, riding a YZ450F for the Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing team, took a 4th place finish in the 450SX class to win the 2025 AMA Supercross title, his third in the class. It was Yamaha’s first 450SX title win in three years, since Eli Tomac lifted the trophy in 2022.
Webb won the 250SX West championship in 2015, followed by two titles in 2016, winning the 250SX West and 250MX championships. For 2017 he moved up to the premier class of 450SX and rode a YZ450F for two seasons before moving on. He then returned to Yamaha for the 2024 season, where he was in contention for the title before finishing 2nd overall.
In the early stages of the 2025 season, he scored points at a steady pace, finishing second in rounds 4 and 5. In round 6, he took a long-awaited first win of the season, making him even on points with title rival Chase Sexton. At Round 7 that followed, he won his second race of the season to take over the championship lead.
Webb continued with consistent results in the second half of the season, increasing his lead to 15 points. In the rounds that followed, he and Sexton traded 1st and 2nd place finishes. Webb lost out in rounds 13 and 14 as his lead shrank to just 9 points, but when he took a fifth win of the season at Round 15, he widened the gap to 12 points. Round 16 saw Sexton close to within 9 points again heading into the final round.
At the season finale in Salt Lake City, Webb got a strong start and led the first lap to the cheers of the crowd. He was subsequently passed by the top three riders including Sexton, but he rode with minimal risk to hold on to fourth place, and in the end won his third title and first on a Yamaha YZ450F, as the crowd in Salt Lake City roared with delight.
AMA Supercross first began in 1974, and in its inaugural year Yamaha won the very first 250cc (predecessor to the current 450SX class) title with Pierre Karsmakers. In 1977, Bob Hannah won three consecutive titles, followed by Mike Bell in 1980, then from 1998 to 2000 Jeremy McGrath took three championship wins. Chad Reed won in 2004 and 2008, James Stewart in 2009, and Eli Tomac in 2022. Adding Webb’s 2025 win marks Yamaha’s 13th premier class title in supercross history.
Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing will be back in action challenging for the AMA Pro Motocross Championship that gets underway on May 24, followed by the SuperMotocross World Championship kicking off on September 6.
Cooper Webb – Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing
“Man, what a night! To win this championship means the world to me. There were a lot of hard-fought days to get to where we are at right now, and being a three-time champion is rare territory. I’ve got to give it up to the team, my family, and everyone in my corner. I really appreciate it.”
Rich Simmons – Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing 450 Team Manager
“I want to start off with a big congratulations to Webb on his third title! It was great for the team to have Coop clinch the championship, and Justin finish third in the points. The work our crew and riders put in for this type of success is hard to put into words, so I’m very happy for all of them to be rewarded for their efforts. What a great Supercross season for all three riders, overall. I want to thank them for that, and not forget Eli’s performance early in the season. We’re looking forward to having him back. We will enjoy the weekend off and then move our focus to motocross.”
