Blueair says efforts to weaken California air pollution regulations are ‘out of sync’ with new scientific evidence underlining dangers of bad air quality

Chicago, March 5, 2016 – Millions of Californian citizens could be the biggest losers if regulations limiting air pollution in the state are loosened, warns Blueair, America’s leading mobile indoor air purification company. Blueair today said that any weakening of existing air quality regulations could likely lead to increases in pollution-related health problems.

“It is deeply concerning to read news reports that Southern California’s air quality board is weakening air pollution regulation despite mounting evidence of the health dangers posed by smog and other airborne contamination,” said Herman Pihlträd, president of Chicago-based Blueair Inc. Mr. Pihlträd was referring to news reports that California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District Board is backing new smog legislation that is more friendly to industries that have in the past been accused of being polluters.

Speaking Saturday at the opening of the International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago where Blueair is exhibiting its leading edge indoor air purification devices, Mr. Pihlträd said new research is providing clear-cut evidence about how exposure to accumulated air pollution significantly shortens life expectancy and degrades quality of life.

A landmark study published late February by two prestigious UK medical institutions, the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said air pollution plays a role in many of the major health challenges of our day, and is linked to cancer, asthma, stroke and heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and dementia.

The study noted how the damage from air pollution occurs over a lifetime, from a baby’s first weeks in the womb all the way through to the years of older age, harming the heart, brain, hormone systems and immunity, and effecting growth, intelligence, and development of the brain and coordination.

“It is worrying that in a state famed globally for its progressive approach to people’s health, welfare and healthy lifestyles, steps are underway that are out of sync with the latest research on the health consequences of air pollution.We should be strengthening rather than weakening protection against the accumulated cradle to grave health exposure dangers posed by polluted air,” Mr. Pihlträd said.
