Greetings from Rodin, Monet and Einstein at Auction

A monumental album with a wealth of personal greetings from the 20th century’s great thinkers of Europe will go under the hammer at Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers in Copenhagen this Summer with an estimate of DKK 500,000. Prior to this auction the album will be exhibited in Paris from 21-22 March.

At the end of May, a unique album amicorum with a special Danish provenance will be up for auction. The content was collected by the Danish critic and scholar Georg Brandes' daughter Edith Brandes (1879-1968) in the years from 1890-1940. The unique album consists of more than 250 original contributions in the form of letters, photographs, autographs, drawings, pieces of music sheets and more. The album contains a plethora of historic names such as Auguste Rodin, Claude Monet, Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, Rainer Maria Rilke, Emile Zola, Anatole France, Lev Tolstoj, Stefan Zweig, John Stuart Mill, Henrik Ibsen, August Strindberg, Henry James, Selma Lagerlöf and many, many more.

The album not only shows that Georg Brandes had close acquaintances in broad circles of intellectual Europe, the album also shows to what extent many of the contemporary European intelligentsia admired him. Edith Brande's diligent work with gathering this amazing material is a very important documentation of a decisive era in modern literature and intellectual history”, says book specialist Lærke Bøgh.

Georg Brandes (1842–1927) was an undaunted cultural critic who for more than 50 years represented Danish open-mindedness and tolerance. He was incredibly productive and is today especially known for being the father of “The Modern Breakthrough”, a period in Scandinavian literature, which was initiated with a series of lectures at Copenhagen University in 1871.

Edith Brandes’ album is estimated at a price of DKK 500,000 and will be auctioned off in Bruun Rasmussen’s salesroom in Copenhagen at the end of May.

Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers is one of Scandinavia’s leading international auction houses, and one of Denmark’s oldest. It all started on 6 October 1948, when Arne Bruun Rasmussen conducted the first traditional auction in the saleroom at Bredgade 33 in Copenhagen. Today, Jesper Bruun Rasmussen stands at the helm of the family-run business together with the third generation of the family, his son Frederik and daughter Alexa, and the company’s CEO Jakob Dupont.

In 2004, the first online auction was launched, and today the auction house has expanded to include departments in Copenhagen and Aarhus and representations in Sweden, Germany, France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Spain, Italy, Thailand and the US. About 100,000 lots are put up for auction each year at the traditional auctions and daily online auctions. Here you can bid on everything from art, antiques, modern design and jewellery to books, coins, stamps, wine and weaponry.
