New statue to mark the 10th birthday of Kent high speed train depot

Friday, 10th November, the rail industry and politicians are gathering in Kent to celebrate ten years since Hitachi opened its high speed train depot. The event includes a speech by Damian Green MP for Ashford and the presentation of the statue crafted by local artist, Joel Tarr.

Hitachi Rail, one of the largest builder and maintainer of trains in the UK, has launched a new national apprentice and graduate programme. The company already trains 54 apprentices to build trains at their manufacturing site at Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. The new intake will see over 100 trainees join over the next two years at sites across the UK, including newly built depots.

On Tuesday 8th August, the first of Great Western Railway’s Intercity Express Trains for Devon and Cornwall carried out test runs in Somerset, between Bruton and Cogload. Two more trains are due to arrive in the South West within the coming weeks as part of a comprehensive test programme.

Hitachi Rail Europe is on schedule to employ 250 people at their newly built Doncaster depot. The depot is hiring a brand new team to maintain new fleets of intercity trains inspired by Japanese bullet trains, which are due to start running next year. Hitachi has invested £80m in the Doncaster site to create a facility that is clean, light and packed with the most advanced industry technology.
