Gateway to the ski slopes

There are a number of ski resorts to be found just one hour from the capital of Bavaria, such as Wallberg and Alpspitze. However, most people prefer making a slightly longer journey and head for Zugspitze, which at 2,962 metres above sea level is the highest ski resort in Bavaria with the best guarantee of snow. It’s possible to ski here from early autumn through to late spring, and it offers tens of kilometres of pistes.

The simplest way to get to Zugspitze is by train from Munich. Naturally you can hire a car at the airport, but traffic in and out of Munich – especially at weekends – can soon eat into your valuable skiing time.

The first train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen departs at 05.30, but since the slopes don’t open until 09.00, you can enjoy another hour of sleep. The 06.30 train will deliver you smoothly into the town, which prior to the 1936 Olympics was actually two separate towns, after a one and a half hour journey through forest and farmland. From there you board the Zugspitzbahn, for a ride of almost an hour up into the mountains.

To find out more about the ski resorts round Munich, you can check out the Alpen Plus website. You can find information about combi tickets for transport and ski passes, and you can read more about the various offers at the ski resorts, such as family days, ladies days and evening skiing. You will also find up-to-date reports on snow conditions and weather.

Once back in Munich after a long day on the slopes, it may be tempting to do as the locals do and recharge with a hot sauna and a cold beer. The most stylish of the city’s public baths is Müllersches Volksbad.

It was built in the late 1800s, and the pool and saunas exude old-world luxury. For somewhat reserved Scandinavians, it can be disconcerting that Germans of both genders forego swimwear, but it’s simply a matter of throwing off your inhibitions and enjoying naked bathing.

In the evenings and late into the night awaits Munich’s social scene for anyone with the inclination and energy.
