Lofoten’s wild west

The Lofoten wall extends over 100 km out into the Norwegian Sea. Out towards its tip lies Moskenes island with its green meadows, white beaches and majestic mountains. A tour of Moskenes takes 2 to 5 days, depending on how many detours you’re tempted to make and how much time you have at your disposal.

On a sunny July day we set off to explore for ourselves. After only a few kilometres we could see just why Lofotodden was designated Norway’s 40th national park last year. The scenery opened out to the west, with spectacular views to Horseidvika. Beyond the large, chalk-white beach stretched the azure expanse of the ocean, enticing us for a swim. Until we dipped a toe in and found that the inviting water was a chilly 10–12 degrees.

Nevertheless, at Kjerkfjorden we braved a dip. It was a chilly pleasure to plunge into the clear, salty ocean; we didn’t manage many strokes before leaping back out onto the jetty.

Kjerkfjorden is an isolated spot; the only navigable onward route was via the fjord, by coastal steamer to Vindstad. Close by was Bunesstranda beach. Of the many sandy beaches in the Lofoten islands, this is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular. We immediately decided to pitch camp, and our simple dinner tasted exquisite amid panoramic views of beach, ocean and craggy peaks. We took a night-time stroll by the water’s edge; it’s difficult to settle down to sleep amidst the endless daylight of the north Norwegian summer.

After 24 hours at Bunesstranda and in the surrounding peaks we travelled on by coastal steamer. From the quay at Forsfjorden it was a steep uphill trek. Our t-shirts were soon wringing wet, while one of the most idyllic picnic spots on our tour revealed itself. Behind us lay Reinefjorden, in front lay Krokvatnet, and we were encircled on all sides by untamed Norwegian scenery.

The weather gods were on our side; not a single drop of rain fell. We were lucky. It’s not uncommon to encounter all kinds of wind and weather along the Norwegian coast, and in the Lofoten islands.
