Battery storage enables fast charging at VfB Stuttgart using the existing grid connection
- ADS-TEC Energy ChargePost provides two public charging points with up to 250 kW of charging power
- Integrated battery storage enables fast-charging without a medium-voltage grid connection
- Another joint project with Stadtwerke Stuttgart, following the fast-charging hub in Zuffenhausen
Nürtingen/Stuttgart, Germany, October 22, 2026. Electric vehicles can now charge at up to 250 kW at the club center of German Bundesliga soccer club VfB Stuttgart. Municipal utility Stadtwerke Stuttgart (SWS) has commissioned an ADS-TEC Energy ChargePost at the public parking lot P3 on Mercedesstraße. The system provides two fast-charging points and is connected to the existing low-voltage grid. An integrated 201 kWh battery supplies the additional power that the grid connection alone cannot deliver. This enables a 63 kW grid connection to support charging at up to 250 kW at the vehicle, without the need for a dedicated transformer substation or a medium-voltage connection.
“Seeing a ChargePost featuring the VfB crest outside the club center makes us proud, and is particularly special for us as a company from the region. Technically, the site is a textbook example. The parking lot has a standard low-voltage grid connection that could never have supplied 250 kW on its own. Our storage technology makes up the difference and boosts the available power to high-power charging levels. This meant we did not have to tear up half the parking lot for thick cables or give up valuable space for a transformer and switchgear,” says Thomas Speidel, CEO of ADS-TEC Energy. Alongside its charging technology, the ChargePost features two 75-inch displays. These can be used for digital out-of-home advertising or to provide up-to-date information, such as announcements about events around the club center.
This is not the first joint project for SWS and ADS-TEC Energy. In October 2025, SWS opened a fast-charging hub at Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen train station with four ChargePost systems and eight charging points. These systems also operate on the low-voltage grid.
At the VfB site, the ChargePost complements 22 AC charging points rated at 11 kW each. SWS operates the facility using electricity from renewable sources. VfB employees, visitors to the club grounds and guests of nearby event and cultural venues can charge their vehicles during their stay. Drivers can pay without registering via QR code, by credit card or with mobile payment services such as PayPal, Google Pay and Apple Pay. The SWS charging app and charging card are also accepted, as are all charging cards from other e-mobility service providers.
