Stadtwerke Murau strengthen regional energy resilience with island-capable battery storage from ADS-TEC Energy
- Two battery energy storage systems providing a total capacity of 10 MWh and 4.8 MW of power
- Combination of hydropower and BESS enables stable island operation during grid outages
- Integrated energy system enhances grid stability, flexibility and security of supply
Murau (AT) /Nürtingen (GER), June 18, 2026 – With the delivery of a new battery energy storage system (BESS), Murauer Stadtwerke (Murau Municipal Utilities) are taking another step towards strengthening the resilience and flexibility of the region's energy infrastructure. ADS-TEC Energy is supplying two battery storage containers with a combined capacity of 10 MWh and an output of 4.8 MW, installed at an existing hydropower plant in Murau, Austria.
The system will support peak shaving, grid stabilization and the integration of locally generated renewable electricity from hydropower and photovoltaic systems. At the same time, it creates the technical foundation for stable island operation in the event of a grid outage.
If the public grid fails, the battery energy storage system establishes a stable electrical island by providing voltage and frequency reference signals. The hydropower plants automatically synchronize with this reference and resumes power generation. While the hydropower plant supplies the base load, the battery system balances load fluctuations and absorbs surplus energy, ensuring stable operation of the local microgrid.
"This project is an important step towards strengthening the long-term security of our regional energy supply. Combining hydropower with a grid-forming battery storage system increases the resilience of our network while providing greater operational flexibility," said Günther Staber, Managing Director of Murauer Stadtwerke GmbH. "We chose ADS-TEC Energy because they are far more than a component supplier. They are an implementation partner working closely with us to develop a solution tailored to our requirements. Short decision paths and strong technical support were key factors in our decision."
"Many regional utilities already operate strong renewable generation assets, such as hydropower or photovoltaic plants. The next step is enabling these assets to continue supplying reliable power even during grid disturbances," said Roland Klauss, CEO of ADS-TEC Energy Austria. "This is exactly where we support our customers, from the initial planning and system engineering through technical integration and commissioning on site. The Murau project demonstrates how existing hydropower generation can be intelligently combined with battery storage to enable reliable island operation."
ADS-TEC Energy supplies the system as a fully integrated skid-mounted solution including battery storage, power conversion system, transformer and energy management technology. The core components are factory assembled and delivered as a largely pre-configured system, reducing installation time on site.
Commissioning is scheduled for summer 2026. The battery storage project forms part of a broader investment programme by Murauer Stadtwerke to strengthen regional energy infrastructure and grid resilience. Alongside expanding the electricity network, the utility is investing in additional hydropower generation capacity. The new Murau West hydropower plant is expected to supply electricity to approximately 4,300 households.
