AOECS Launches Young Researcher Award in Coeliac Research

The Association of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS) is proud to announce the launch of the AOECS Young Researcher Award in Coeliac Disease Research – a new international initiative designed to recognise and encourage outstanding early-career researchers working to improve the lives of people with coeliac disease.

The award reflects AOECS' long-term commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and strengthening collaboration between researchers, clinicians and patient organisations across Europe and beyond.

Coeliac disease affects around 1 - 1,4% of the global population, yet many questions remain regarding diagnosis, treatment, disease mechanisms and long-term management. By recognising promising young scientists early in their careers, AOECS aims to help stimulate innovative research that can ultimately benefit millions of people living with the condition.

"We believe that investing in young researchers is investing in the future of coeliac disease care," says Veronica Rubio, Secretary General of AOECS. "Scientific progress depends on new ideas, fresh perspectives and international collaboration. Through this award, we hope to encourage talented researchers to continue pushing the field forward."

The award is open to early-career researchers from around the world whose work contributes to a better understanding of coeliac disease or related gluten-mediated disorders. Research may cover areas including:

• Basic and translational science
• Clinical research
• Therapeutic innovation
• Nutrition and dietetics
• Public health and patient-centred research

Applications will be evaluated by an independent international Scientific Evaluation Committee using transparent, publicly available evaluation criteria. The assessment will consider both the scientific quality of the proposed research and the applicant's academic achievements, ensuring a fair and rigorous selection process.

The winner will be announced during the AOECS Annual Conference in Amsterdam in October 2026. Beyond the €500 award, the recipient will gain international recognition through an exclusive invitation to the conference and the opportunity to showcase their research to leading experts and representatives of the global coeliac community. Shortlisted finalists will also be invited to present their work during a dedicated online scientific meeting later in the year.
