One of film history’s most iconic costumes is going under the hammer at Bruun Rasmussen: the original Superman "Flying Costume" worn by Christopher Reeve in Richard Donner’s groundbreaking blockbuster Superman: The Moviefrom 1978. The costume was used in the film’s spectacular flying sequences and consists of the iconic red cape, blue top and trousers, yellow belt, and red leather boots. The image of Christopher Reeve soaring through the air in this very outfit has become synonymous with Superman for millions of fans around the world.
With an estimated value of DKK 800,000–1,000,000, the costume stands as a testament to its iconic status and historical significance – a rare collectors’ item that bridges cultural heritage and cinematic history. It is sure to capture the attention of collectors, culture enthusiasts, film lovers around the world – and not least, devoted fans of the Superman universe.
A Superman Costume with Strong Provenance and Cinematic Legacy
The costume’s historical significance is evident in the authentic details preserved from the film’s production – including unique handwritten markings directly linking it to the lead actor, Christopher Reeve. Inside the top, the inscription “Nathans-Bermans CR Fly” refers to the renowned British costume house Bermans & Nathans Ltd., known for outfitting major international productions for decades. The boots are marked “CR R 4” and “CR L 4” – abbreviations for Christopher Reeve and size indicators – while fabric labels sewn into the interior further attest to the costume’s use and organisation during filming.
The lot is accompanied by extensive documentation confirming its authenticity and cinematic importance. This includes a colour photograph of Reeve in character during a flight scene, an unopened DVD of the film, and a CD-ROM with catalogue material from the 2003 Christie’s auction in London where the costume was last offered. Since then, it has been part of the Nordisk Film collection in Valby, Denmark, where it has held a place of pride.
