  In a landmark moment for the global museum sector, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has announced the “Shared Island Stories Between Scotland and the Caribbean: Transnational Youth Exchange” project submitted by the Barbados Museum & Historical Society (BMHS) as the winner of the inaugural ICOM Award for Sustainable Development Practice in Museums.

  ICOM and UNESCO have renewed their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding, enhancing their commitment to cultural heritage protection, education, and technology integration. The renewed MoU sets the stage for joint initiatives, the exchange of expertise, and strengthened advocacy efforts on a global level.

The 27th ICOM General Conference in Dubai featured a dedicated “ICOM for Peace” session. Moderated by President Emma Nardi (2022–2025 mandate), the session brought together contributions from Kaja Širok and Jody Steiger (ICOM Executive Board), Erik Somers (Advisory Board Member, INMP), Maria Gaitán (National Centre for Historical Memory, Colombia), Amina Krvavac (Director, War Childhood Museum, Bosnia and Herzegovina), and included a special message from Óscar Arias Sánchez, former President of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The “ICOM for Peace” session highlighted ICOM’s commitment to fostering peace and building a better future in which museums hold a healing power, underscoring the importance of the newly launched initiative and the lived experiences shared by the speakers.

ICOM is launching a joint operational initiative with INTERPOL. One of the most anticipated sessions at the 27th ICOM General Conference in Dubai was the roundtable on the Revision of the ICOM Code of Ethics. Moderated by Hillary Carty OBE, the session brought together Léontine Meijer-van Mensch (Chair of ETHCOM and Member of the Working Group, ICOM Germany), Sally Yerkovich (Head of the ICOM Code of Ethics Revision, ICOM US), Bruno Brulon Soares (Working Group Member, ICOM Brazil), Julie Higashi (Working Group Member, ICOM Japan), Dr Kathrin Pabst (Working Group Member, ICOM Norway) and Luisa De Peña Díaz (External Expert to ETHCOM and Working Group Member, ICOM Dominican Republic). The panel reflected on the Working Group’s journey since 2020, beginning with the decision by the ICOM Standing Committee on Ethics (ETHCOM) to revisit and renew the Code of Ethics. The session included an open Q&A, giving participants the opportunity to ask questions, share insights and contribute feedback directly to the evolving process. The revised ICOM Code of Ethics will be presented for vote at the ICOM Annual Meeting in June 2026.

The General Assembly of ICOM has elected Rotterdam, the Netherlands, as the host city of the 28th ICOM General Conference, which will take place in 2028.  The ICOM General Conference 2028 will explore how museums can actively engage in dialogue, act as catalysts for inclusion and sustainability, and respond to the challenges of our times through collaboration and creativity.  🔗 Link in bio for more information

The 27th ICOM General Conference, ICOM Dubai 2025, is set to begin tomorrow at the Dubai World Trade Centre! The conference will bring together over 4,500 participants from around the world, including museum experts, cultural leaders, and global thinkers. During today’s press conference, Her Excellency Hala Badri, Director General of #DubaiCulture and Chairperson of the ICOM Dubai 2025 Organising Committee; Prof. Emma Nardi, President of ICOM; Medea Sógor Ekner, Director General of ICOM; and Nasir Aldarmaki, Chair of ICOM UAE, shared key highlights of the upcoming event, which will feature more than 400 speakers, over 100 dialogue forums, and 10 keynote sessions addressing the most pressing challenges and opportunities in the museum sector.
