🏛️ On 20–21 April 2026, ICOM attended the International Symposium “Cultural Property Protection as a driver of cooperation across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Gulf region”, which took place in Nicosia, Cyprus, and organised by the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence. 🌍 The event gathered policymakers, law enforcement professionals, researchers, and cross-sector experts to share insights, build stronger connections, and tackle the rising challenges of illicit trafficking in cultural property. 🏺 Discussions underscored the need for coordinated, multidisciplinary action to protect our shared heritage, fostering meaningful dialogue, fresh perspectives, and lasting collaborations.

International Museum Day 2026 will focus on Museums Uniting a Divided World 🌍 🏛️ Museums are powerful bridges in our societies. As trusted public spaces and vital parts of our shared social fabric, they foster dialogue, understanding, and connection across cultures, generations, and borders—especially in times of division. ⚡ Since 2020, International Museum Day has supported a set of @unitednations Sustainable Development Goals. Museums contribute in many ways, from promoting inclusion and accessibility to encouraging collaboration and peacebuilding. In 2026, we highlight these three key SDGs: 🍀 Goal 10 – Reduced inequalities 🍀 Goal 16 – Peace, justice, and strong institutions 🍀 Goal 17 – Partnerships for the goals 👉 On 18 May, we invite museums, museum professionals, visitors, and supporters to come together and harness the power of museums to bridge divides, strengthen communities, and inspire positive change worldwide. 💡 Get involved by organising activities, building partnerships, and sharing your events to connect with the global museum community. 🤝 This year’s theme also celebrates ICOM’s 80th anniversary, marking decades of international collaboration and commitment to museums and society. 🔎 Update on the Revision of the ICOM Code of Ethics The revision of the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums reflects more than four years of consultation across ICOM’s global network. Since 2020, #ETHCOM has led a structured and inclusive process, including four rounds of member consultations, surveys, draft reviews, and exchanges with committees and affiliated organisations. Over 75 webinars and information sessions supported transparency and engagement throughout. The process is now in its final stage. Members have reviewed the French and Spanish translations, and the Secretariat is preparing the final version in ICOM’s three official languages. 📅 Next steps: • Release to members by 7 May 2026 • Submission for adoption at the General Assembly in June 2026 📊 Key figures: • 4+ years of consultation • 4 consultation rounds • 75+ webinars and sessions • Broad global participation 💬 How member feedback shaped the Principle: Collections The Principle received strong support, with 77% agreement. Feedback contributed to: • More concise, principle-based language • Expanded references to digital and intangible collections • Clearer terminology (e.g. stewardship, return, restitution) • Strengthened provisions on protection, provenance research, and acquisition, including in contexts of conflict This revision reflects a collaborative effort across the ICOM community. 📩 For questions: ethics@icom.museum
