Alternoil and EDEKA Südwest Commission Bio-LNG Filling Station

Fuel station operator Alternoil, a pioneer in clean heavy-duty transport and a member of DIE GAS- UND WASSERSTOFFWIRTSCHAFT, together with EDEKA Südwest, one of seven EDEKA regional companies in Germany, yesterday commissioned a Bio-LNG filling station at the headquarters of the food retailer in Offenburg.

“Our objective is to achieve the CO₂-neutral operation of the entire truck fleet of EDEKA Südwest across the board by 2030,” said EDEKA Südwest board member Klaus Fickert. To promote active climate protection and continuously reduce its ecological footprint, the Offenburg-based retail company plans to procure around 300 vehicles in the medium term, powered by low-emission and more climate-friendly alternatives as part of its sustainability strategy. Already today, 27 Bio-LNG trucks supply the region from the logistics hub in Offenburg. By 2030, the entire truck fleet is to be converted to Bio-LNG — a project into which EDEKA Südwest invests around 20 million euros annually for vehicles and infrastructure. With this initiative, the company aims to reduce its annual greenhouse gas emissions by around 20,000 tons.

Further filling stations are already in the pipeline: a second Bio-LNG filling station is currently being built at the EDEKA Südwest site in St. Ingbert, Saarland. This station is scheduled to go into operation by September 2025. Additional Bio-LNG stations will follow in Balingen and Heddesheim.

At the inauguration, State Secretary Dr. Patrick Rapp emphasized the potential of this transport infrastructure project: “The Bio-LNG project not only contributes to the reduction of the greenhouse gas CO₂ in the atmosphere, but also to the reduction of nitrogen oxide and noise emissions as well as particulate matter pollution.”

Alternoil’s Bio-LNG is produced from green hydrogen generated by wind power and biomethane from certified biological waste processes. It meets the criteria of the Renewable Energy Directive 2018/2001 (REDII) of the European Union and represents a product of sustainable circular economy. As a result, 100 percent of CO₂ emissions are avoided, less particulate matter and nitrogen oxides are released, and air quality is sustainably improved. Additional benefits include reduced fuel consumption due to its high performance and long range compared to other fuels. Moreover, Bio-LNG is safer than other fuels, as it evaporates without residue and is neither toxic nor corrosive.
