bayernets Celebrates the Commissioning of the H2-ready Gas Pipeline AUGUSTA

In March, bayernets GmbH, together with Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy Hubert Aiwanger and representatives of the municipality of Kötz in the Bavarian district of Günzburg, celebrated the commissioning of the AUGUSTA gas pipeline. The 40.5-kilometer-long underground pipeline will connect Baden-Württemberg to the gas storage facilities in southern Bavaria and the Salzburg region. Against the backdrop of discussions surrounding the construction of new, flexible gas-fired power plants, the project has gained additional significance. The pipeline was also designed to be used for transporting hydrogen in the future.

The pipeline was technically operational in December 2025. Following the completion of the remaining special structures – including the underground crossing of the A8 motorway and further crossings of railway lines and waterways – the project was officially inaugurated. According to the company, recultivation work along the pipeline route is now beginning and is expected to continue until the first half of 2026.

At the inauguration, Aiwanger emphasized the importance of a comprehensive concept for a secure and sustainable energy supply during the energy transition. To compensate for the volatility of renewable energies, regional gas-fired power plants are needed, which must be reliably supplied with gas. The AUGUSTA pipeline makes an important contribution to this and could also support the transport of hydrogen in the future.
