Biogas From BALANCE for Municipal Heat in Wolfshagen
At the beginning of October, BALANCE Erneuerbare Energien GmbH, together with representatives from politics, business, and administration, ceremoniously inaugurated the new local heating grid in Wolfshagen (in the municipality of Groß Pankow, Prignitz). With a climate-friendly biogas plant for heat supply in rural areas, BALANCE demonstrates how climate protection, economic efficiency, and regional cooperation can successfully interact.
The first two customers were the industrial company WDM Deutenberg and the municipal daycare center "Spatzennest". Since May 2025, they have been supplied with heat from climate-friendly biogas. The plant currently supplies around 1000 MWh of green heat per year, which corresponds to approximately 25% of the plant's available capacity. Additional residential buildings are to be connected before the end of 2025.
The model for a decentralized, climate-friendly heat supply in rural areas has an impact beyond municipal boundaries, as the use of regional energy sources strengthens local value creation, reduces dependence on fossil fuels, and creates planning security for public and private investments.
Biogas can be an important component of a decentralized heat supply – especially in rural regions. The fact that the project was implemented so quickly shows what is possible when the municipality, companies, and project partners work together. This was stated by Volker Klinkert, Managing Director of BALANCE, at the plant's official launch. The event, held at the Wolfshagen village community center, offered around 80 guests the opportunity for exchange and dialogue, in addition to speeches from project participants and a symbolic ceremony. There was also an opportunity to tour the plant.
