EU Commission approves German support programme for green hydrogen in Canada

The European Commission has approved a German support programme worth €200 million aimed at promoting the production of renewable fuels, in particular green hydrogen. The programme focuses on production projects in Canada, whose output is intended to be made available to the European market at a later stage.

The funding is intended to help reduce the production costs of green hydrogen and to stimulate investment in corresponding projects. Renewable hydrogen plays a central role in the European Union’s plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions and ensure long-term energy security. In addition to expanding domestic production, Germany is also relying on imports from third countries with favourable conditions for renewable energy.

For several years, the German federal government has been actively supporting the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy at both national and European level. Alongside domestic funding programmes, Germany is also participating in European tenders to support hydrogen projects. The aim is to build reliable supply chains at a global level and to provide companies with greater planning certainty.

By approving the support programme, the European Commission underscores the importance of international partnerships for the development of a global market for green hydrogen. At the same time, the measure fits into the European strategy to accelerate the market ramp-up of climate-friendly energy carriers and to gradually reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
