First Bio-LNG Bunkering in Europe
The companies Anew Climate, a marketer of biomethane and member of the Biomethane Taskforce initiative, and the LNG bunkering company Avenir LNG, a member of DIE GAS- UND WASSERSTOFFWIRTSCHAFT, have for the first time carried out the bunkering of liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) in Europe. The loading took place in Klaipėda, Lithuania. Anew Climate supplied the waste-based bio-LNG, which is certified under RED III. The bio-LNG was then transported to Sweden via an Avenir bunkering vessel. There, it is intended to be used as fuel for ferries and to make a significant contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions in maritime passenger transport.
The fuel provided by Anew Climate can be used as a “drop-in” energy carrier without technical modifications in existing LNG infrastructure and LNG-powered vessels. According to CEO John Cosmo Dwelle, the project demonstrates that certified bio-LNG supply chains in Europe are feasible and can be implemented in the short term. Anew Climate aims to further expand these supply chains and establish a supportive regulatory framework.
The successful loading highlights the growing importance of renewable gases in the maritime sector—particularly against the backdrop of stricter European climate regulations and increasing requirements for emission reductions in shipping.
