Fraunhofer Institutes and SGC Energy Are Pooling Their Expertise in CO₂ and Hydrogen Technologies

The Fraunhofer Institutes for Applied Polymer Research IAP and for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT have entered into a strategic partnership with the South Korean company SGC Energy for the further development of energy conversion and storage technologies. The focus is on CO₂ electrolysis, hydrogen technologies, fuel cells, and batteries. The collaboration is based on a Memorandum of Understanding.

A key focus is the electrochemical conversion of CO₂ into feedstocks for chemical products and synthetic fuels. SGC Energy plans to integrate existing CO₂ capture plants with the Fraunhofer Institutes' technologies, thereby advancing the production of sustainable aviation fuels in South Korea. Fraunhofer IAP contributes its expertise in innovative and PFAS-free membranes for electrolyzers, while Fraunhofer UMSICHT provides expertise in CO₂ electrolysis cells, stack concepts, and industrial system integration.

Specific joint research and development projects are to be defined in the coming months. The goal is to further develop the technologies and promote their industrial implementation and commercialization.
