HGHH Commissions Kraftanlagen to Build a 100 MW Electrolyzer Near Hamburg
The Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH), a 100-megawatt electrolysis plant for green hydrogen, is being built at the site of the former Moorburg coal-fired power plant. As one of the first large-scale hydrogen projects in Germany, the HGHH aims to significantly advance the decarbonization of industry and the Port of Hamburg. The consortium consists of Luxcara, an independent asset manager, and Hamburger Energiewerke.
For the construction of the plant infrastructure surrounding the electrolyzer, the HGHH has commissioned the Munich-based company Kraftanlagen Energies & Services with responsibility for the balance of plant. The contract includes the planning, supply, and construction of all technical ancillary and utility systems for the project. The scope of services also includes the connection to the hydrogen grid and the construction of a truck loading station.
The 100-megawatt electrolyzer will be supplied by Siemens Energy. Following completion of the building complex, work on the plant infrastructure is scheduled to begin in 2026. The plant is scheduled to go into operation by the second half of 2027. Moorburg will then produce around 10,000 tons of green hydrogen per year and market it via the HH-WIN distribution grid and truck loading stations.
"We are very proud to be able to implement this project and support HGHH in realizing its vision. As a flagship project of the energy transition, Moorburg unites our common goals on the path to a green future," said Heinrich Dauer, Head of the Energy Business Unit at Kraftanlagen.
