Höegh Evi and Nord Gas Solutions Complete Validation of Flexible Ammonia Crackers
In early July, Höegh Evi and the Norwegian engineering and services company Nord Gas Solutions (formerly Wärtsilä Gas Solutions) completed performance tests of their ammonia-to-hydrogen cracking technology. The pilot plant in Stord, Norway, demonstrated high performance in terms of conversion rate, efficiency, hydrogen yield, and operational flexibility.
Thanks to its modular design, the cracker can be used in both floating and land-based applications and is particularly distinguished by its scalable capacity. It converts ammonia into hydrogen with a purity level of over 99.5 percent. This product is gaining importance in light of the growth of global hydrogen production capacities and Germany's increasing demand for imported climate-neutral energy carriers. According to the companies, the plant can produce up to 200,000 tons of hydrogen per year. The development of the technology is supported by the Norwegian "Green Platform" program. Besides Höegh Evi and Nord Gas Solutions, the consortium includes BASF (catalyst supplier), the University of Southeast Norway, Sustainable Energy, and the Norwegian Institute of Energy Technology (IFE).
Nils Jakob Hasle, EVP Clean Energy at Höegh Evi, said this milestone reaffirms that floating terminals are a fast and competitive way to achieve large-scale hydrogen production. He added that they look forward to further validating these results in long-term tests.
