IVECO S-Way CNG Sets a New Benchmark for Range and Efficiency

Last summer, an IVECO S-Way CNG tractor unit covered more than 1,000 kilometers on a single refueling. With this, IVECO aims to demonstrate the impressive performance capability of gas-powered heavy-duty tractor units. The test drive, carried out by two French journalists, ran along the Belgian, Spanish, and French borders. Under real operating conditions, the truck hauled a total weight of 30 tonnes, allowing the testers to focus closely on efficiency and endurance in everyday use.

The gas engine impressed the testers with smooth, responsive, and remarkably quiet operation. The driving experience on the road was comparable to that of a diesel model – but significantly quieter, the journalists emphasized. Average consumption over more than 1,000 kilometers was below 21 kg/100 km. This, together with the possibility of quick refueling, confirmed the technological maturity and everyday suitability of CNG solutions. Compared to previous models, IVECO also succeeded in increasing total capacity by 18 percent thanks to the new 620-liter tanks.

In its press release, IVECO emphasizes that biomethane, when used as a fuel for transport applications, is a sustainable and economical solution. At comparable or even lower prices, drivers can currently refuel at around 4,300 Bio-LNG and 800 Bio-CNG stations. For 2026, 50 new stations are already planned. In addition, biomethane produced from organic waste reduces CO₂ emissions by an average of 95 percent and significantly lowers particulate and nitrogen oxide levels compared to diesel.

IVECO stresses that this marks a milestone highlighting its commitment to sustainable transport. The goal is to provide customers with performance and cost-effectiveness in equal measure, explains Giandomenico Fioretti, Head of Alternative Propulsion Business Development at IVECO. “With more than 1,000 kilometers on a single tank, the IVECO S-Way CNG sets a new benchmark for range, efficiency, and comfort, once again proving that gas is a genuine alternative to diesel in long-haul transport – a decisive step toward decarbonizing road freight.”
