Kick-off for the Hydrogen Innovation Center Chemnitz
The Hydrogen Innovation Center (HIC) in Chemnitz officially launched its operations today. The center, supported with €84.4 million in funding, is designed to support small and medium-sized enterprises as well as start-ups in developing new business opportunities in the field of hydrogen technologies.
With its location in Chemnitz, the HIC aims to establish itself as an effective hub for the transformation of the region’s automotive suppliers, as well as its mechanical and plant engineering companies. In these sectors, the necessary resources to conduct independent hydrogen research are often lacking. By offering rentable hydrogen laboratories, test facilities, and development services, the HIC intends to fill this gap and enable local companies to enter the hydrogen economy. In addition, the HIC is expected to attract start-ups in the hydrogen sector to the region.
The project is one of four strategic sites within the national Innovation and Technology Center for Hydrogen, which together receive up to €290 million in federal funding. Since March 2025, the HIC has already been providing technological services as a research and transfer center, including the development of fuel cell stacks and systems as well as a virtual testing environment for new ideas.
