Lhyfe Becomes Largest Producer of RFNBO-Certified Hydrogen in Europe
The French hydrogen producer Lhyfe has received RFNBO certification for three additional production sites in Germany and France, making it Europe’s largest provider under this standard.
The RFNBO certification (“Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin”) is considered the most demanding benchmark of the European Union for green hydrogen under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). It confirms that hydrogen production is fully based on renewable energy and meets the EU taxonomy requirements for environmental impact and traceability.
In addition to the 1-megawatt facility in Bouin, France, which was certified in May 2025, the Buléon (5 MW), Bessières (5 MW), and Schwäbisch Gmünd (10 MW) sites are now also certified. This gives Lhyfe four RFNBO-compliant production facilities with a total capacity of 21 MW, equivalent to up to 8.3 tons of green hydrogen per day, according to the company.
The certification allows customers to demonstrate the sustainability of the hydrogen they purchase and provides access to national and European support programs.
