Lhyfe supplies green hydrogen to BMW Group in Steyr
French hydrogen producer Lhyfe has signed a multi-year supply agreement with BMW Group, making its first delivery of green hydrogen to a site in Austria. BMW Group's research and development centre in Steyr, Upper Austria, is preparing for the series production of fuel cell systems for the new BMW X5 model. From 2028, BMW Group's third-generation hydrogen drivetrain system is set to be manufactured in Steyr – more compact, more powerful and more efficient than its predecessors.
The hydrogen supplied will be used for series development, industrialisation as well as testing and validation purposes at the site. Deliveries are made using Lhyfe's own fleet of tanker trucks, one of the largest in Europe. In 2025, the company carried out more than 850 hydrogen deliveries across Europe. All production sites are certified to EU standards as RFNBOs, ensuring full traceability of the green origin throughout the entire supply chain.
The project underlines the growing importance of hydrogen as a complement to battery-electric drivetrains – particularly for vehicles with high range requirements, short refuelling times, or operating in regions with limited grid infrastructure.
