Market Survey for Hydrogen Storage Capacities Launched by RWE Gas Storage West

RWE Gas Storage West GmbH is planning the commercial commissioning of the first German hydrogen storage facility at the Gronau-Epe site in 2027.

According to the current marketing status, 30% of the planned firm storage capacities are still available as of 01.01.2028. RWE Gas Storage West GmbH plans to market this remaining storage capacity in the first half of 2025.

In order to best align the marketing process and product design with customer needs, all market participants will have the opportunity from February 24 to specify their storage requirements and willingness to book as part of a market survey; the survey will run until March 28, 2025.

The storage infrastructure will play a key role in the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy. In future, up to 38 million cubic meters (equivalent to approx. 135 gigawatt hours) of hydrogen can be stored in RWE's hydrogen cavern storage facility, which will help to buffer fluctuating hydrogen production from wind and solar power. This will enable hydrogen produced in the future to be made available to industrial customers as and when required.
