Netze BW and DUNGS Are Planning a Hydrogen Supply for the Rems-Murr District

Netze BW GmbH and Karl Dungs GmbH & Co. KG have signed a letter of intent to supply the Urbach site near Stuttgart with hydrogen in the future. The goal is to gradually convert local industrial applications – even those outside the regional hydrogen core grid – to climate-neutral energy carriers. Dungs will act as both a user and supplier of hydrogen technologies and, using decentralized electrolysis, will also supply neighboring industrial and craft businesses with climate-friendly energy.

At its headquarters in Urbach, the company develops and produces systems for safe and efficient gas combustion. However, since the site is relatively far from the SEL natural gas pipeline, which will be part of the future hydrogen core grid, a decentralized solution for climate-neutral energy supply is necessary. According to the companies, a direct connection is not expected until the long term, at the earliest from 2035. With this letter of intent, the partners nevertheless want to explore early on how a future hydrogen supply can be realized even away from the major transport pipelines.

Adolphi, Head of Gas grid and Infrastructure Management at Netze BW, explained that regional clusters could play a crucial bridging role until the core hydrogen grid is available nationwide. The project in Urbach is an example of how industry, grid operators, and the region can jointly assume responsibility.
