New Hydrogen Filling Station Opens in Waiblingen – Flagship Project for Regional Hydrogen Mobility
A new hydrogen filling station was opened in Waiblingen near Stuttgart in May. The facility, jointly built by GP JOULE and Stadtwerke Waiblingen as part of the "Hy.Waiblingen" project, is initially available to public transport operators. From June 2026, lorries and passenger cars will also be able to refuel with hydrogen at the site.
The infrastructure expansion is intended to advance the regional hydrogen economy at the same time. From May 2026, the first six hydrogen buses in the Rems-Murr district have been entering trial operation in stages, with seven additional articulated buses set to follow by the end of the year. The commissioning of a 2 MW electrolyser is also planned for early 2027; the unit will produce green hydrogen on-site for the filling station, with the waste heat generated fed into the municipal heat network.
The project is regarded as a nationwide flagship initiative for the regional use of hydrogen in the transport sector. From August 2027, large parts of bus services in Waiblingen, Fellbach-Kernen, and Weinstadt/Korb are set to operate emission-free.
The Rems-Murr district and the city of Waiblingen are jointly investing around 11.7 million euros in the project. A further five million euros comes from federal funding under the H2Rivers grant scheme. The joint project of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region aims to establish a regional hydrogen economy spanning the entire chain from production through to use in public transport.
