OMV and Masdar Sign Agreement for the Development and Operation of a 140 MW Electrolysis Plant in Austria
OMV and energy company Masdar have signed a binding agreement to establish a joint venture that will finance, build, and operate a 140 MW electrolysis plant in Bruck an der Leitha. The project is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and is intended to be a key component in the decarbonization path of the OMV refinery in Schwechat.
Construction of the plant began in September 2025, with commissioning scheduled for 2027. The plant will use renewable energies to produce green hydrogen for the defossilization of industrial processes. OMV will hold a majority stake in the new joint venture, with Masdar acquiring 49 percent. According to company sources, the partnership combines OMV's strategic leadership in integrated fuels and chemicals with Masdar's global project and financing expertise in renewable energy. This is intended to reduce risks and accelerate the development of large-scale hydrogen production.
The agreement was signed at the ADIPEC conference in the presence of high-ranking representatives of both countries and companies. It is believed that the project will drive forward the energy transition in Europe and accelerate OMV's transformation towards climate-neutral molecules.
H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the UAE and Chairman of Masdar, emphasizes that the United Arab Emirates has long been committed to transforming global energy systems. This joint venture now combines Masdar's two decades of experience as a leading provider of renewable energy with OMV's industrial expertise, paving the way for future business opportunities across Europe.
