RAG Austria Starts Construction of Austria's Largest Hydrogen Plant

At the beginning of July, RAG Austria AG, together with plant engineering company ANDRITZ, broke ground on the expansion of its hydrogen production facility in Gampern, Upper Austria. The existing electrolysis plant will be expanded from 2.5 to a total of 15 megawatts. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2026.

The additional 12.5 MW electrolysis capacity will make surplus renewable electricity from the summer months storable in the form of hydrogen, thus providing it for electricity and heat supply, as well as for industrial applications, particularly in winter. The project is part of RAG Valley Gampern, where the entire hydrogen value chain – from production and storage to utilization – is being tested and gradually expanded. The Austrian technology group ANDRITZ has been commissioned to supply the plant.

Markus Mitteregger, CEO of RAG Austria, emphasized that an integrated energy system comprising renewable energy generation, storage, and utilization is crucial for a secure energy supply. The project demonstrates how surplus summer electricity can be stored long-term and used during periods of low renewable electricity generation. The expansion will simultaneously strengthen regional industry and implement a further step towards a resilient hydrogen economy.

  • RAG Austria startet Bau von Österreichs größter Wasserstoffanlage

    Die RAG Austria AG hat Anfang Juli gemeinsam mit dem Anlagenbauer ANDRITZ den Spatenstich für den Ausbau ihrer Wasserstoffproduktion im oberösterreichischen Gampern gesetzt. Die bestehende Elektrolyseanlage wird von 2,5 auf insgesamt 15 Megawatt erweitert. Die Inbetriebnahme ist für Ende 2026 vorgesehen.
    Die zusätzliche 12,5-MW-Elektrolyse soll überschüssigen erneuerbaren Strom aus den Sommermo
