Rheinmetall Achieves Milestone in the Future Field of Hydrogen
A major manufacturer and supplier of renewable green hydrogen intends to award the technology group Rheinmetall its first major order in the field of hydrogen storage and transportation systems with an order volume in the mid double-digit million euro range.
A corresponding letter of intent (LoI) for the framework agreement covers the delivery of one hundred multiple element gas containers (MEGC) of various sizes. These multi-element gas containers will be used to transport large quantities of technical gases such as hydrogen and will play a key role in the future climate-neutral energy supply. With this letter of intent, the technology group has reached an important milestone in the still young MEGC history of the Group. The first MEGCs are due to be delivered at the beginning of 2026. The customer is a major European manufacturer and supplier of renewable green hydrogen.
Philipp Engl, Head of the INVENT H2 business unit: “We are very proud that we have already been able to win the first major customer for our innovative product in such a short time and thus further establish the still young business field of hydrogen storage and transport systems for Rheinmetall.”
Rheinmetall's innovative Multiple Element Gas Container is equipped with advanced Type IV hydrogen pressure tanks that allow pressures of up to 700 bar. These pressure tanks are characterized by a shorter winding time, reduced use of carbon fibres and increased storage capacity. The system offers a practical complete solution that also includes smart service and maintenance support. The scalable length is between 20-40 feet. The containers can hold up to 1,000 kg (380 bar) of hydrogen.
The goal of making Germany climate-neutral by 2045 requires an increasing demand for hydrogen, which will play an important role in the future energy mix as the energy carrier of the future, in line with the National Hydrogen Strategy. The transportation of hydrogen as an energy source will play a decisive role in this, in order to provide industrial customers in particular with an efficient and secure supply chain.
Promising talks already underway with other potential customers underscore Rheinmetall's prospects of gaining a further foothold in the promising hydrogen market with innovative solutions.
